Description

This Air Fryer Chicken Katsu recipe is a healthier take on the Japanese classic, featuring crispy, juicy chicken cutlets coated in panko breadcrumbs and cooked to perfection in the air fryer.

Ingredients

  • 2 chicken breasts, butterflied and pounded to even thickness
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Cooking spray or oil spray
  • Tonkatsu sauce, for serving
  • Steamed rice and shredded cabbage, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Butterfly and pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness for uniform cooking.
  2. Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper.
  3. Prepare three separate bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat each chicken piece in flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with panko, pressing gently to adhere.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray the breaded chicken with oil spray on both sides.
  7. Place the chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and cooked through.
  8. Remove from the air fryer and let rest for a few minutes before slicing.
  9. Serve with tonkatsu sauce, steamed rice, and shredded cabbage if desired.

Notes

  • Make sure to spray both sides of the chicken with oil to ensure even crisping.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Pounding the chicken ensures faster and more even cooking.
