Description
This Air Fryer Chicken Katsu recipe is a healthier take on the Japanese classic, featuring crispy, juicy chicken cutlets coated in panko breadcrumbs and cooked to perfection in the air fryer.
Ingredients
- 2 chicken breasts, butterflied and pounded to even thickness
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Cooking spray or oil spray
- Tonkatsu sauce, for serving
- Steamed rice and shredded cabbage, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Butterfly and pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness for uniform cooking.
- Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper.
- Prepare three separate bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs.
- Coat each chicken piece in flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat with panko, pressing gently to adhere.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3-5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the breaded chicken with oil spray on both sides.
- Place the chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and cooked through.
- Remove from the air fryer and let rest for a few minutes before slicing.
- Serve with tonkatsu sauce, steamed rice, and shredded cabbage if desired.
Notes
- Make sure to spray both sides of the chicken with oil to ensure even crisping.
- Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- Pounding the chicken ensures faster and more even cooking.
