Description

Crispy and golden air fryer hash browns made from scratch using simple ingredients. Perfectly seasoned and fluffy on the inside with a crunchy exterior.

Ingredients

  • 500 g (1.1 lb) floury potatoes (such as Maris Piper or Russet)
  • 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
  • 1 tbsp rice flour (optional, or replace with more cornflour)
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1015 squirts spray oil
  • Maldon salt, to serve

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes in a saucepan without peeling or chopping and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Drain and allow the potatoes to cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove any blemishes, then grate the potatoes using a rotary or box grater.
  5. Transfer grated potatoes to a bowl and sprinkle with cornflour and rice flour. Toss gently to coat.
  6. Add melted butter, oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until evenly combined.
  7. Divide into 8 portions and shape into patties about 1 cm thick.
  8. Place on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 1 hour.
  9. Preheat air fryer and spray basket lightly with oil. Arrange hash browns in a single layer with space between them.
  10. Spray tops lightly with oil.
  11. Air fry at 200°C (400°F) for 13-15 minutes until golden and crispy.
  12. Cook in batches if needed and serve with a sprinkle of Maldon salt.

Notes

  • Rice flour enhances crispiness but can be substituted with additional cornflour.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer to ensure even cooking.
  • Freezing helps the patties hold their shape during cooking.
  • Serve with ketchup, eggs, or as part of a breakfast platter.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge and reheat in the air fryer for best texture.
