Description
Crispy and golden air fryer hash browns made from scratch using simple ingredients. Perfectly seasoned and fluffy on the inside with a crunchy exterior.
Ingredients
- 500 g (1.1 lb) floury potatoes (such as Maris Piper or Russet)
- 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
- 1 tbsp rice flour (optional, or replace with more cornflour)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tbsp neutral oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 10–15 squirts spray oil
- Maldon salt, to serve
Instructions
- Place the potatoes in a saucepan without peeling or chopping and cover with cold water.
- Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Drain and allow the potatoes to cool for 15 minutes.
- Remove any blemishes, then grate the potatoes using a rotary or box grater.
- Transfer grated potatoes to a bowl and sprinkle with cornflour and rice flour. Toss gently to coat.
- Add melted butter, oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until evenly combined.
- Divide into 8 portions and shape into patties about 1 cm thick.
- Place on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for 1 hour.
- Preheat air fryer and spray basket lightly with oil. Arrange hash browns in a single layer with space between them.
- Spray tops lightly with oil.
- Air fry at 200°C (400°F) for 13-15 minutes until golden and crispy.
- Cook in batches if needed and serve with a sprinkle of Maldon salt.
Notes
- Rice flour enhances crispiness but can be substituted with additional cornflour.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer to ensure even cooking.
- Freezing helps the patties hold their shape during cooking.
- Serve with ketchup, eggs, or as part of a breakfast platter.
- Store leftovers in the fridge and reheat in the air fryer for best texture.
