Ingredients
- 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of the butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved and bubbling, about 2 minutes.
- Pour the brown sugar mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Arrange the sliced apples in a circular pattern on top.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, cream together remaining 1/4 cup butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time, then add sour cream and vanilla, mixing until well combined.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
- Carefully spread the batter over the apples in the pan, smoothing the top.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then run a knife around the edges and invert onto a serving plate.
