Description

This easy and quick pan-seared tilapia recipe results in perfectly golden fillets with a flavorful seasoning blend, ideal for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 (4 to 6-ounce) tilapia fillets
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the tilapia fillets dry with paper towels.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture evenly over both sides of the tilapia fillets.
  4. Lightly dredge each fillet in flour, shaking off any excess.
  5. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large nonstick or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Add 2 fillets and cook until golden-brown and cooked through, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil and 2 fillets.
  7. Once all fillets are cooked, reduce heat to low and add the butter to the skillet. Let it melt, then drizzle over the fish.
  8. Serve the tilapia warm with lemon wedges.

Notes

  • Make sure tilapia is completely dry before seasoning and flouring to ensure a crisp crust.
  • Tilapia can be substituted with another white fish like cod or haddock.
  • Use a fish spatula for easier flipping without breaking the fillets.
