Description
This Berry French Toast Casserole is a delicious and easy make-ahead breakfast or brunch dish featuring fluffy bread soaked in a sweet custard, layered with fresh berries, and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread (14–16 oz), cut into 1-inch cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries)
- 1 tbsp powdered sugar (optional, for topping)
- Butter or nonstick spray for greasing
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
- Spread half of the bread cubes evenly into the prepared dish, then sprinkle with half of the berries. Repeat with remaining bread and berries.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and berries in the dish. Press down gently to soak all the bread.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight for best results.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove casserole from refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature while the oven heats.
- Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until golden brown and the center is set.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
- You can use any combination of fresh or frozen berries.
- Make sure bread is slightly stale or toast it beforehand to avoid sogginess.
- This casserole can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning.
- Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, or yogurt for added flavor.
