Description
Crispy and flavorful Amish Onion Fritters made with a simple batter and sweet chopped onions, fried to golden perfection. These fritters make a delicious appetizer or savory side dish.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornmeal
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1–2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 1/2 medium onions, chopped (about 2 1/2 cups)
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt.
- Pour in the milk and stir until the mixture forms a thick batter.
- Add the chopped onions and mix thoroughly to coat them in the batter.
- Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to 350–375°F (175–190°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and flatten each slightly.
- Fry until golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Remove fritters and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm for best taste.
Notes
- Adjust salt to taste depending on the sweetness of the onions.
- Yellow or sweet onions work best for maximum flavor.
- Use a thermometer to maintain the correct oil temperature for even frying.
