Description

Crispy and flavorful Amish Onion Fritters made with a simple batter and sweet chopped onions, fried to golden perfection. These fritters make a delicious appetizer or savory side dish.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 12 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 medium onions, chopped (about 2 1/2 cups)
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Pour in the milk and stir until the mixture forms a thick batter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and mix thoroughly to coat them in the batter.
  4. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat to 350–375°F (175–190°C).
  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and flatten each slightly.
  6. Fry until golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove fritters and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm for best taste.

Notes

  • Adjust salt to taste depending on the sweetness of the onions.
  • Yellow or sweet onions work best for maximum flavor.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain the correct oil temperature for even frying.
  • These fritters taste best when served immediately.
