Description

This classic apple crisp is made with tender spiced apples and a buttery oat topping. It’s the perfect comforting dessert for fall and is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a combination)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, flour, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. Stir until apples are well coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the softened butter and use a fork or your hands to mix until crumbly.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor.
  • The crisp can be made ahead and reheated before serving.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • You can double the recipe and bake it in a 9×13 inch dish.
