Description

This Apple Upside-Down Cake features caramelized apples layered beneath a moist, spiced cake. A comforting dessert that’s perfect for fall or any time you crave warm apple flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Melt 1/4 cup butter and pour it into the bottom of the prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the butter.
  3. Arrange the apple slices over the sugar mixture in a spiral or desired pattern. Set aside.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. In a large bowl, beat the remaining 1/4 cup butter with granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in sour cream, milk, and vanilla extract.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
  8. Pour the batter evenly over the apples in the pan and smooth the top.
  9. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for best results.
  • Let the cake rest before inverting to allow the topping to set slightly.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
