Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- Melt 1/4 cup butter and pour it into the bottom of the prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the butter.
- Arrange the apple slices over the sugar mixture in a spiral or desired pattern. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a large bowl, beat the remaining 1/4 cup butter with granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in sour cream, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined.
- Pour the batter evenly over the apples in the pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.

- Let the cake rest before inverting to allow the topping to set slightly.
