Description

This caramelized onion dip is a rich, creamy, and flavorful appetizer made with deeply caramelized onions, sour cream, cream cheese, and a touch of seasoning. It’s perfect for parties, game days, or any snacking occasion.

Ingredients

  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Chives, for topping
  • Chips or vegetables, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook, stirring often, for 45 to 60 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized. Reduce heat if they start to burn.
  3. Once caramelized, remove the onions from heat and let them cool slightly.
  4. In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth.
  5. Stir in the garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  6. Add in the caramelized onions and mix until combined.
  7. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving to let flavors meld.
  8. Top with chopped chives before serving and serve with chips or vegetables.

Notes

  • Make the dip a day ahead for even better flavor.
  • Use a mix of butter and oil for richness and to prevent burning.
  • Serve with kettle chips or crunchy vegetables for best texture contrast.
