Description

This easy French Toast Casserole is a make-ahead breakfast dish made with crusty bread, eggs, milk, and warm spices. It’s perfect for holidays or weekend brunch and can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread (day-old or slightly stale), cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick spray. Add cubed French bread to the dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press the bread gently to help absorb the custard mixture.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  6. Remove casserole from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature while the oven preheats.
  7. Drizzle melted butter over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  10. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best texture—it absorbs the custard better.
  • To make it extra indulgent, add a streusel topping before baking.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for the milk and cream if preferred.
  • Great for holidays or feeding a crowd.
