Ingredients
- 4 large eggs, room temperature
- ⅔ cup milk
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 12 slices bread
- Butter, for cooking
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it with butter.
- Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak slightly on both sides.
- Place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet.
- Cook for about 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Repeat with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
- Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- Brioche, challah, French bread, or slightly stale bread work especially well for French toast.
- For cinnamon sugar French toast, sprinkle cooked slices with cinnamon sugar before serving.
- For stuffed French toast, add cream cheese or Nutella between two slices of bread.
- Dairy-free milk such as almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk can be used.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freeze cooked slices with parchment paper between them for up to 2 months.
- Reheat in a skillet over low heat, microwave for 20 to 30 seconds per slice, or bake at 350°F (176°C) for about 8 minutes.
