This Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread is a savory, flavorful loaf inspired by the popular Subway version. It features a soft, fluffy interior with a golden crust infused with Italian herbs and a generous topping of melted cheese, perfect for sandwiches or enjoying on its own.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 3 cups bread flour (plus more for dusting)
- 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp dried Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add vegetable oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the remaining flour and knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Whisk the egg and brush it over the loaf.
- In a small bowl, mix Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Sprinkle it over the loaf.
- Top generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Cover and let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.
