Description

This Italian Herbs and Cheese Bread is a savory, flavorful loaf inspired by the popular Subway version. It features a soft, fluffy interior with a golden crust infused with Italian herbs and a generous topping of melted cheese, perfect for sandwiches or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 3 cups bread flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add vegetable oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until combined.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour and knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Whisk the egg and brush it over the loaf.
  7. In a small bowl, mix Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Sprinkle it over the loaf.
  8. Top generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  9. Cover and let the dough rise again for 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for easier kneading.
  • Adjust herbs and cheese quantities to taste.
  • Try adding other cheeses like cheddar or provolone for variation.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
