Description

This Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Casserole is a comforting and satisfying way to start your day. Packed with buttery biscuits, savory sausage gravy, and plenty of cheese, this casserole is perfect for family gatherings or holiday mornings.

Ingredients

1 can of refrigerated biscuit dough (8 count)

1 pound breakfast sausage

2 cups milk

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

2 large eggs

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned, breaking it apart into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add the flour to the cooked sausage and stir for about 1 minute to make a roux.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to ensure the mixture is smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Cut the refrigerated biscuits into quarters and layer them in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  6. Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits.
  7. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and heavy cream, then pour this mixture over the casserole.
  8. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top, then bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the biscuits are cooked through.
  9. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with paprika if desired.

Notes

  1. Vegetarian Option: Replace the sausage with vegetarian sausage or sautéed mushrooms for a meatless version.
  2. Spicy: Add some crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce to the sausage gravy for a spicy kick.
  3. Cheese: Swap the cheddar cheese for your favorite variety like mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or even pepper jack for more flavor.
  4. Add Veggies: Incorporate vegetables like sautéed onions, bell peppers, or spinach into the sausage gravy for extra flavor and nutrients.
  5. Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  6. Reheating: Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30-60 seconds or bake the entire casserole at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes.
