A comforting and creamy broccoli cheese bake made with a rich cheese sauce and crispy breadcrumb topping—perfect as a side dish for family dinners or holidays.
Ingredients
- 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen chopped broccoli
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ cup dry bread crumbs
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish.
- Cook broccoli according to package directions and drain well.
- In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk, and cook until thickened and bubbly.
- Remove from heat and stir in cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted.
- Add cooked broccoli to the cheese sauce and mix well. Pour into prepared casserole dish.
- In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Sprinkle over the casserole.
- Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Notes
- You can substitute fresh broccoli if desired—just steam until tender before using.
- Add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the cheese sauce for extra flavor.
- Use sharp Cheddar for a stronger cheese flavor.
