Description

A comforting and creamy broccoli cheese bake made with a rich cheese sauce and crispy breadcrumb topping—perfect as a side dish for family dinners or holidays.


Ingredients

  • 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen chopped broccoli
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish.
  2. Cook broccoli according to package directions and drain well.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk, and cook until thickened and bubbly.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted.
  5. Add cooked broccoli to the cheese sauce and mix well. Pour into prepared casserole dish.
  6. In a small bowl, combine bread crumbs with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Sprinkle over the casserole.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the top is golden and bubbly.

Notes

  • You can substitute fresh broccoli if desired—just steam until tender before using.
  • Add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the cheese sauce for extra flavor.
  • Use sharp Cheddar for a stronger cheese flavor.
