Description

This Buttery Garlic Naan is a soft and fluffy Indian flatbread infused with fresh garlic and brushed with melted butter. It’s perfect for serving alongside curries, stews, or grilled meats.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 1/2 cup warm water (as needed)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Add warm milk, yogurt, and oil. Mix until a soft dough forms, adding warm water a little at a time if needed.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide dough into 10 equal portions and roll into balls. Let them rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Roll out each ball into an oval or tear-drop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
  7. Heat a cast iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat until very hot.
  8. Place a naan in the pan and cook until bubbles form on top and the bottom is golden brown (about 1-2 minutes). Flip and cook the other side.
  9. Brush the cooked naan with melted butter mixed with minced garlic.
  10. Sprinkle with chopped cilantro if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • If dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If too dry, add a touch more water.
  • For a smokier flavor, finish naan directly over a gas flame for a few seconds.
  • Naan can be frozen after cooking. Reheat in a hot skillet or oven.
