Description

These Caramel Apple Cinnamon Scones are buttery, tender, and packed with juicy apple chunks, warm cinnamon spice, and a sweet caramel drizzle. Perfect for cozy fall mornings or as a delightful treat any time of year.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick or 115g) unsalted butter, frozen
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream, plus more for brushing
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 heaping cup (about 130g) peeled and chopped apple (about 1 medium apple)
  • Coarse sugar, for topping (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) store-bought or homemade salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Whisk the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together in a large bowl.
  3. Grate the frozen butter using a box grater. Add it to the flour mixture and combine using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands until the mixture comes together in pea-sized crumbs.
  4. Whisk 1/2 cup heavy cream, the egg, and vanilla extract together. Pour over the flour mixture and mix until everything is moistened.
  5. Fold in the chopped apples. Try not to overwork the dough.
  6. Work the dough into a ball on a floured surface and press into an 8-inch disc. Cut into 8 wedges and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Brush scones with a bit of heavy cream and sprinkle with coarse sugar if using.
  8. Bake for 22–25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool for a few minutes.
  9. Drizzle the cooled scones with caramel sauce before serving.

Notes

  • Scones are best enjoyed the day they are made but can be stored at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerated for 5 days.
  • You can freeze baked scones (without caramel drizzle) for up to 3 months.
  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith or sweet varieties like Honeycrisp for best flavor.
