Description

Cheesy French Onion Meatballs are a savory, comforting dish combining juicy beef meatballs with caramelized onions and gooey melted cheese, all simmered in a rich French onion-style gravy.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss)
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add 1 tbsp olive oil and butter. Add sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized.
  5. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and thyme. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Return meatballs to the skillet and spoon onion mixture over them. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Cover skillet with lid or foil and cook on low heat until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
  8. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use Swiss cheese if Gruyère isn’t available.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
  • For extra flavor, deglaze onions with a splash of white wine.
