Description
Cheesy French Onion Meatballs are a savory, comforting dish combining juicy beef meatballs with caramelized onions and gooey melted cheese, all simmered in a rich French onion-style gravy.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss)
- 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
- Chopped parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Form mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
- Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add 1 tbsp olive oil and butter. Add sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and thyme. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
- Return meatballs to the skillet and spoon onion mixture over them. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
- Cover skillet with lid or foil and cook on low heat until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot.
Notes
- Use Swiss cheese if Gruyère isn’t available.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
- For extra flavor, deglaze onions with a splash of white wine.
