Description
A classic Italian Margherita sauce that’s perfect for pizza, pasta, and antipasti. Made with fresh ingredients, it’s rich in tomato flavor with a balanced hint of garlic, basil, and oregano.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish or added flavor)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, and sugar.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer uncovered on low heat for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
- Optional: Add fresh basil during the last few minutes of cooking or as a garnish.
- Use immediately on pizza, pasta, or as a dip, or store in the refrigerator for later use.
Notes
- This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to a week.
- Freeze in airtight containers for longer storage (up to 3 months).
- For a smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender after cooking.
