Description

Crispy deep-fried marshmallows are a fun, sweet treat with a crunchy golden coating and a soft, gooey center. Perfect for parties, desserts, or a creative twist on a childhood favorite.

Ingredients

  • Marshmallows: 24 (standard size)
  • All-purpose flour: ¾ cup
  • Cornstarch: ¼ cup
  • Baking powder: ½ teaspoon
  • Salt: ⅛ teaspoon
  • Granulated sugar: 2 tablespoons
  • Milk (or milk substitute): ½ cup
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Vanilla extract: ½ teaspoon
  • Breadcrumbs (or crushed cornflakes): 1 cup
  • Vegetable oil (for frying): about 2–3 inches deep
  • Powdered sugar or melted chocolate (optional, for serving): as desired

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and whisk until a thick batter forms.
  4. Place the breadcrumbs or crushed cereal in a shallow bowl.
  5. Skewer each marshmallow (optional), dip it into the batter, then roll in the breadcrumbs to fully coat. For extra crispness, repeat the coating process once more.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to about 180°C (350°F).
  7. Fry the coated marshmallows in batches for 1–1½ minutes, turning until golden brown on all sides.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with melted chocolate if desired, and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Best served immediately for maximum crispiness.
  • Double-coating ensures better texture and prevents coating from falling off.
  • Use gluten-free flour and crumbs for a gluten-free version.
  • Experiment with flavors: add spices like cinnamon or pumpkin spice to the batter.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven for a few minutes to restore crispiness.
