Description

These Crusty French Bread Rolls are perfectly golden and crisp on the outside, with a soft and airy interior. Ideal for sandwiches, dinner rolls, or enjoying with butter, these easy-to-make rolls bring bakery-quality bread to your home kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir to form a shaggy dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball.
  6. Place rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover loosely with a towel, and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place an empty metal baking dish on the bottom rack.
  8. Right before baking, pour a cup of hot water into the empty baking dish to create steam, then quickly place the rolls in the oven.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, mist the rolls with water before baking.
  • You can freeze baked rolls for up to 3 months.
  • Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area for best results.
