Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir to form a shaggy dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball.
- Place rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover loosely with a towel, and let rise for another 30–45 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place an empty metal baking dish on the bottom rack.
- Right before baking, pour a cup of hot water into the empty baking dish to create steam, then quickly place the rolls in the oven.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, mist the rolls with water before baking.
- You can freeze baked rolls for up to 3 months.
- Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area for best results.
