Description

A rich and decadent chocolate Ding Dong Cake featuring moist chocolate cake layers filled with a fluffy vanilla cream and topped with a smooth chocolate ganache.


Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • Ingredients listed on cake mix box (eggs, oil, water)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare and bake the chocolate cake in two 9-inch round pans according to package instructions. Let cakes cool completely.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk and flour. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Cool completely.
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat sugar, butter, and shortening until light and fluffy. Add the cooled milk mixture and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the cream filling evenly over the top. Place the second cake layer on top.
  5. Heat heavy cream until just simmering, then pour over chocolate chips. Let sit 2 minutes and stir until smooth.
  6. Pour ganache over the cake, spreading evenly over the top and sides. Let set before slicing and serving.
