Description
These creamy scalloped potatoes are a rich and comforting side dish made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes baked in a velvety cream sauce with garlic and cheese. Perfect for holiday dinners or a cozy family meal.
Ingredients
- 2.5 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (Gruyère, cheddar, or a mix)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, followed by the heavy cream, until smooth and thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
- Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and thyme if using.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
- Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 25–30 minutes, until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before garnishing with fresh parsley and serving.
Notes
- Yukon Gold potatoes work best for their creamy texture, but Russet potatoes can also be used.
- For extra flavor, add caramelized onions or cooked bacon between layers.
- Use freshly shredded cheese for best melting results.
- Can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
