Description

These creamy scalloped potatoes are a rich and comforting side dish made with layers of thinly sliced potatoes baked in a velvety cream sauce with garlic and cheese. Perfect for holiday dinners or a cozy family meal.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (Gruyère, cheddar, or a mix)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  4. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, followed by the heavy cream, until smooth and thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
  5. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and thyme if using.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
  8. Repeat with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 25–30 minutes, until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before garnishing with fresh parsley and serving.

Notes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes work best for their creamy texture, but Russet potatoes can also be used.
  • For extra flavor, add caramelized onions or cooked bacon between layers.
  • Use freshly shredded cheese for best melting results.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
