Description

This easy French toast recipe creates soft, custardy centers with golden, buttery edges. Perfect for a quick breakfast or brunch using simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 10 (1-inch) slices brioche (or thick sliced Texas toast or stale white sandwich bread)
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined. Whisk in the milk.
  2. Dip one slice of bread at a time into the egg mixture, soaking for 10–30 seconds per side. Do not pre-soak; cook immediately after dipping.
  3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt about 1 teaspoon of butter per slice. Place soaked bread onto the pan and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 3–4 minutes per side. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  4. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed. Serve immediately or keep warm in a 100°F oven until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For softer, custardy centers, soak bread longer; for crispier toast, dip quickly.
  • Stale or slightly dry bread works best as it absorbs the mixture without falling apart.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven while finishing the batch.
  • Serve with syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
