Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Red or pink food coloring
- Valentine-themed sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough into two equal parts. Tint one half with food coloring.
- Roll each dough half into rectangles of equal size between parchment paper.
- Layer the colored dough on top of the plain dough and gently press together.
- Roll the layered dough into a log, starting from the long edge.
- Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour until firm.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Slice the chilled dough into 1/4 inch thick rounds and place on prepared sheets.
- Optional: Press sprinkles into the edges of the cookies before baking.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until the edges are set but not browned.
- Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
