This Greek Chicken Gyros recipe features juicy marinated chicken wrapped in warm pita bread with fresh vegetables and creamy tzatziki sauce, making it a flavorful and satisfying Mediterranean dish.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1 tbsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese (optional)
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix olive oil, yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, vinegar, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Add chicken to the marinade and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken for 5–7 minutes per side or until fully cooked and charred in spots.
- Let the chicken rest for a few minutes, then slice thinly.
- Warm pita breads and layer with lettuce, tomato, red onion, sliced chicken, and tzatziki sauce. Top with feta if using.
- Fold the pita and serve immediately.
Notes
- Marinate the chicken overnight for best flavor.
- You can use store-bought or homemade tzatziki sauce.
- For a low-carb version, serve over a salad instead of in pita bread.
