Description
Juicy hamburger steaks pan-seared and simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy for a classic Southern comfort meal. Perfect served over mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty family dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until combined. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer, then return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
- Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until the steaks are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice, spooning extra onion gravy over the top.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use freshly ground black pepper and a high-quality beef broth.
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, add a small amount of additional broth to reach the desired consistency.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
