Description

Juicy hamburger steaks pan-seared and simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy for a classic Southern comfort meal. Perfect served over mashed potatoes or rice for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon oil (for frying)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until combined. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened and lightly caramelized.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer, then return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
  7. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until the steaks are fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice, spooning extra onion gravy over the top.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, use freshly ground black pepper and a high-quality beef broth.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, add a small amount of additional broth to reach the desired consistency.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
