Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Royal icing or your choice of icing (for decoration)
- Sprinkles (optional, for decoration)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until dough forms.
- Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into heart shapes.
- Place cookies on prepared baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Decorate cooled cookies with icing and sprinkles as desired.
Notes
- Chilling the dough is essential to prevent spreading.
- You can freeze the cookies before or after baking for later use.
- Almond extract adds a lovely flavor but can be omitted if desired.
