Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Royal icing or sugar icing for decorating
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden.
  10. Allow cookies to cool completely before decorating with icing and food coloring.
