Description
Sweet heart-decorated sugar cookies that are crisp on the edges, soft in the center, and perfect for decorating with icing for special occasions like Valentine’s Day.
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Royal icing or sugar icing for decorating
- Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool completely before decorating with icing and food coloring.
Notes
- Do not overbake to keep cookies soft.
- Chill the dough to prevent spreading.
- Let icing set completely before stacking cookies.
- Store decorated cookies in an airtight container.
