Description

This homemade blueberry jam is a sweet, flavorful spread that captures the essence of fresh blueberries. Made with simple ingredients, it’s perfect for toast, desserts, or yogurt, and is free from preservatives and artificial flavors.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons water (if needed, to adjust consistency)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the blueberries thoroughly and remove any stems or leaves.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
  3. Stir frequently as the mixture heats and the berries begin to release their juices.
  4. Use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to mash the berries to your preferred texture.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jam thickens.
  6. To check for doneness, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate. If it holds its shape and doesn’t run, it’s ready.
  7. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. For a smoother texture, blend briefly with an immersion blender if desired.
  8. Pour the jam into sterilized jars and let it cool completely before sealing.
  9. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or process in a water bath canner for longer shelf life.

Notes

  • Use wild blueberries for a more intense flavor.
  • You can substitute part or all of the sugar with honey for a different taste.
  • Lemon juice is essential for safe preservation and balanced flavor.
  • Add chia seeds for natural thickening without long cooking.
  • Ensure jars are sterilized for proper storage and safety.
