Description
This homemade blueberry jam is a sweet, flavorful spread that captures the essence of fresh blueberries. Made with simple ingredients, it’s perfect for toast, desserts, or yogurt, and is free from preservatives and artificial flavors.
Ingredients
- 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
- 2 tablespoons water (if needed, to adjust consistency)
Instructions
- Rinse the blueberries thoroughly and remove any stems or leaves.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
- Stir frequently as the mixture heats and the berries begin to release their juices.
- Use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to mash the berries to your preferred texture.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jam thickens.
- To check for doneness, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate. If it holds its shape and doesn’t run, it’s ready.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. For a smoother texture, blend briefly with an immersion blender if desired.
- Pour the jam into sterilized jars and let it cool completely before sealing.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or process in a water bath canner for longer shelf life.
Notes
- Use wild blueberries for a more intense flavor.
- You can substitute part or all of the sugar with honey for a different taste.
- Lemon juice is essential for safe preservation and balanced flavor.
- Add chia seeds for natural thickening without long cooking.
- Ensure jars are sterilized for proper storage and safety.
