Description

A simple homemade bread recipe with a soft interior and golden crust, perfect for sandwiches or serving warm with butter.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add sugar, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Mix until smooth.
  3. Gradually add remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into two equal portions. Shape into loaves.
  7. Place into greased loaf pans, cover, and let rise for 30–45 minutes until doubled.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Use bread flour for a chewier texture.
  • Ensure water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Store bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
