A simple homemade bread recipe with a soft interior and golden crust, perfect for sandwiches or serving warm with butter.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 1/4 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, salt, oil, and 3 cups of flour. Mix until smooth.
- Gradually add remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into two equal portions. Shape into loaves.
- Place into greased loaf pans, cover, and let rise for 30–45 minutes until doubled.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- Use bread flour for a chewier texture.
- Ensure water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- Store bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Freeze slices for longer storage.
