Description
A rich and savory hot dog chili made with ground beef, tomato sauce, and classic chili spices. This slow-simmered topping is perfect for piling onto hot dogs for a classic American chili dog.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 cup ketchup
- 8 oz. tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup white onion (finely minced)
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 1/2 tsp. onion powder
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 Tbsp. chili powder
- 1/2 tsp. ground mustard
- 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp. brown sugar
Instructions
- In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef while crumbling it into very small pieces. Drain excess fat and return the beef to the pot.
- Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, water, finely minced onion, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the chili simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- If the chili becomes too thick, add a little more water or ketchup to reach the desired consistency.
- Spoon the chili over hot dogs and serve.
Notes
- For a smoother texture, continue breaking up the beef as it cooks.
- If you prefer a slightly sweeter chili, add an extra teaspoon of brown sugar.
- This chili can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- It also freezes well for up to 2 months in an airtight container.
- Serve with shredded cheese, diced onions, or mustard for classic chili dog toppings.
