Description

A rich and savory hot dog chili made with ground beef, tomato sauce, and classic chili spices. This slow-simmered topping is perfect for piling onto hot dogs for a classic American chili dog.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 8 oz. tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup white onion (finely minced)
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. ground mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef while crumbling it into very small pieces. Drain excess fat and return the beef to the pot.
  2. Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, water, finely minced onion, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the chili simmer for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. If the chili becomes too thick, add a little more water or ketchup to reach the desired consistency.
  5. Spoon the chili over hot dogs and serve.

Notes

  • For a smoother texture, continue breaking up the beef as it cooks.
  • If you prefer a slightly sweeter chili, add an extra teaspoon of brown sugar.
  • This chili can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • It also freezes well for up to 2 months in an airtight container.
  • Serve with shredded cheese, diced onions, or mustard for classic chili dog toppings.
