Description

These classic Italian Cookies are soft, cake-like treats with a hint of anise flavor, topped with a simple glaze and colorful sprinkles. Perfect for holidays, weddings, or any festive gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon anise extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • Sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla and anise extracts and mix until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheets.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until bottoms are lightly golden. Let cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
  9. Dip the tops of cooled cookies into the glaze and decorate with sprinkles.
  10. Allow glaze to set before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • You can freeze the cookies (unglazed) for up to 3 months.
  • If you don’t like anise flavor, substitute with more vanilla or almond extract.
