Description

This Italian Panettone with Chocolate is a delightful twist on the traditional holiday bread. Soft, fluffy, and filled with chocolate chips, it’s perfect for festive gatherings or as a sweet treat any time of the year.

Ingredients

  • 3 ¾ cups (450g) all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup (75g) sugar
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • ⅔ cup (160ml) warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (170g) chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the eggs, egg yolks, vanilla extract, orange zest, and the yeast mixture.
  3. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Add the softened butter gradually, kneading until fully incorporated. The dough should be slightly sticky but elastic.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 2–3 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. After rising, punch down the dough and mix in the chocolate chips evenly.
  7. Place the dough into a panettone mold or high-sided baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  8. Let the dough rise again for 1–2 hours, until it reaches near the top of the mold.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 40–45 minutes or until golden brown and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Let it cool completely before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
