Description

These Italian Sloppy Joes, also known as Messy Giuseppe Sandwiches, are loaded with savory Italian sausage, peppers, onions, marinara sauce, and melty provolone cheese. Served on toasted ciabatta rolls, they make a quick and hearty weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 6 ciabatta rolls or sliced focaccia rolls

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil, diced red bell pepper, and onion. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  2. Push the vegetables to the edges of the skillet and add the Italian sausage to the center. Crumble and cook the sausage, mixing it with the vegetables, until browned and mostly cooked through, about 5-8 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet and stir to combine. Simmer for 5-8 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  5. Optional: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and warm the ciabatta or focaccia rolls for 4-6 minutes.
  6. Spoon the sausage mixture onto the rolls and top each sandwich with a slice of provolone cheese. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use spicy Italian sausage for extra heat and flavor.
  • Focaccia rolls add an extra Italian-style texture and taste.
  • Toast the rolls lightly to help prevent sogginess.
  • Leftover filling can be refrigerated for up to 4 days.
  • Serve with a side salad, chips, or roasted vegetables.
