Description

Mama’s Cornbread Dressing is a classic Southern side dish made with a flavorful mix of toasted bread, cornbread, sautéed vegetables, and warm seasonings, perfect for holiday meals.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped onions
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 cups finely crumbled toasted bread
  • 4 cups finely crumbled cornbread
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • Turkey broth (as needed)
  • 4 large eggs, beaten

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat; add the onions and celery and sauté until tender.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the crumbled toasted bread and cornbread and mix well.
  3. Add the sautéed onions and celery along with their cooking liquid to the bread mixture.
  4. Mix in the salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning thoroughly.
  5. Gradually add turkey broth using a bulb baster until the mixture is very moist.
  6. Stir in the beaten eggs until fully incorporated.
  7. Transfer the mixture into a large greased baking pan or dish.
  8. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is nicely browned.

Notes

  • Use homemade or store-bought turkey broth for best flavor.
  • Prepare the cornbread a day ahead to make crumbling easier.
  • This recipe can be doubled for larger gatherings.
