Description
Mama’s Cornbread Dressing is a classic Southern side dish made with a flavorful mix of toasted bread, cornbread, sautéed vegetables, and warm seasonings, perfect for holiday meals.
Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 2 cups chopped celery
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 cups finely crumbled toasted bread
- 4 cups finely crumbled cornbread
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon dried sage
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
- Turkey broth (as needed)
- 4 large eggs, beaten
Instructions
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat; add the onions and celery and sauté until tender.
- In a large bowl, combine the crumbled toasted bread and cornbread and mix well.
- Add the sautéed onions and celery along with their cooking liquid to the bread mixture.
- Mix in the salt, pepper, sage, and poultry seasoning thoroughly.
- Gradually add turkey broth using a bulb baster until the mixture is very moist.
- Stir in the beaten eggs until fully incorporated.
- Transfer the mixture into a large greased baking pan or dish.
- Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is nicely browned.
Notes
- Use homemade or store-bought turkey broth for best flavor.
- Prepare the cornbread a day ahead to make crumbling easier.
- This recipe can be doubled for larger gatherings.
- Let the dressing rest for a few minutes after baking before serving.
