Description

These old fashioned homemade sloppy joes are rich, hearty, and full of sweet and smoky flavor. Made with seasoned ground beef and a tangy homemade sauce, they are a quick and satisfying family-friendly dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Chop the onion and green bell pepper into small pieces.
  2. In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and fully cooked.
  3. Drain excess grease if needed.
  4. Add ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, garlic, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir until fully combined.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors blend together.
  6. Butter the inside of the hamburger buns if desired and toast them in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat until golden brown.
  7. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef for a lighter version.
  • Add shredded cheddar cheese or sliced cheese before serving for extra richness.
  • For a spicy kick, mix in diced jalapeños or cayenne pepper.
  • Store leftover meat mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • The sloppy joe filling freezes well for up to 3 months.
  • Toast the buns to help prevent them from getting soggy.
