- 1/4 cup onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Chop the onion and green bell pepper into small pieces.
- In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and bell pepper for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and fully cooked.
- Drain excess grease if needed.
- Add ketchup, yellow mustard, brown sugar, garlic, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir until fully combined.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors blend together.
- Butter the inside of the hamburger buns if desired and toast them in a skillet or on a griddle over medium heat until golden brown.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve warm.
Notes
- Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef for a lighter version.
- Add shredded cheddar cheese or sliced cheese before serving for extra richness.
- For a spicy kick, mix in diced jalapeños or cayenne pepper.
- Store leftover meat mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- The sloppy joe filling freezes well for up to 3 months.
- Toast the buns to help prevent them from getting soggy.
