Description
Tender beef cube steaks smothered in a rich onion gravy, perfect for a comforting and flavorful dinner.
Ingredients
- 4 beef cube steaks (about 1/3 pound each)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for dredging)
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Season the cube steaks with salt and pepper, then dredge in flour, shaking off the excess.
- In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the steaks and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove steaks and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil and butter. Add onions and sprinkle with sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden and soft, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional minute.
- Add beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Return the steaks to the skillet, spooning the onion gravy over them. Cover and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the steaks are tender.
- Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
Notes
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the gravy.
- For extra richness, add a splash of cream to the gravy before serving.
- Use yellow or sweet onions for the best caramelized flavor.
