Description

This Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast combines the luxurious richness of crème brûlée with the comforting texture of French toast. The bread soaks up a custard mixture overnight, resulting in a crispy, golden top and a soft, gooey center. It’s a show-stopping breakfast that’s perfect for special occasions.

Ingredients

1 loaf of French bread, sliced into 1-inch thick pieces

8 large eggs

2 cups heavy cream

1 cup whole milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 cup granulated sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the slices of French bread in the dish in a slightly overlapping fashion.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla extract, brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, making sure all pieces are soaked. Press the bread down gently to ensure it absorbs the liquid.
  4. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to soak up the custard mixture.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the French toast for 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden and crispy, and the center is set.
  7. Once baked, remove the dish from the oven. Sprinkle the top with 1/4 cup granulated sugar.
  8. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it’s golden and crispy, just like a crème brûlée.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  1. To make this recipe gluten-free, use gluten-free bread.
  2. You can top the French toast with fresh berries, caramelized bananas, or drizzle with maple syrup for extra flavor.
  3. If you don’t have a kitchen torch, use a broiler to caramelize the sugar for 2-3 minutes.
  4. For a nutty flavor, add chopped pecans or walnuts to the custard mixture.
  5. If you have leftovers, store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
