Description

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the hot water, and mix until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool in the pan before slicing and serving.
