Description

A homemade version of P.F. Chang’s Spicy Chicken – crispy, tender chicken pieces tossed in a bold, sweet, and spicy garlic chili sauce. Perfect for a takeout-style dinner at home!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (for sauce)
  • Optional: sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Toss the chicken pieces with 1/4 cup cornstarch until evenly coated.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until golden and crispy on all sides, about 6-8 minutes. Remove the chicken and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, water, ketchup, hoisin sauce, and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet with the garlic and red pepper flakes. Stir continuously and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  6. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss to coat evenly with the sauce.
  7. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the chicken is fully coated and heated through.
  8. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, if desired. Serve hot with rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to control the heat level.
  • For extra crispiness, fry the chicken in batches and avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Serve with steamed rice or your favorite stir-fried veggies.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to keep the dish from being overly salty.
