Description

Puerto Rican Quesitos are sweet, flaky cream cheese pastries made with puff pastry and a rich, lightly sweetened cream cheese filling. These golden treats are crispy on the outside, creamy inside, and typically glazed with sugar or honey for an irresistible shine.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of puff pastry sheets (2 sheets), thawed
  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp honey or corn syrup (for glaze, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Unfold the puff pastry sheets and cut each into 4–6 equal rectangles.
  4. Place about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese mixture in the center of each rectangle.
  5. Fold one side of the pastry over the filling, then the other side, overlapping slightly. Press down gently to seal.
  6. In a small bowl, beat the egg with water to make the egg wash. Brush the tops of the pastries with the egg wash.
  7. Place the pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15–20 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
  8. Optional: While still warm, brush the tops with honey or corn syrup for a glossy finish.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Best enjoyed warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed but still cold when working with it for best results.
  • You can use flavored cream cheese or add guava paste for a classic Puerto Rican twist.
  • Do not overfill to prevent leakage during baking.
  • These are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat briefly in the oven or toaster oven to restore crispness.
