Description

Soft and fluffy steamed mantou buns infused with earthy matcha and filled with rich Nutella for a delightful fusion treat. Perfect as a snack or dessert with a balance of sweetness and subtle bitterness.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Nutella, as needed for filling

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, matcha powder, and salt.
  2. Add warm milk and vegetable oil, then knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Cover and let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide into equal portions.
  5. Flatten each portion and place a spoonful of Nutella in the center, then seal and shape into balls.
  6. Let the filled buns rest for 15–20 minutes.
  7. Arrange buns in a steamer and steam over medium heat for 10–12 minutes.
  8. Turn off heat and let buns sit in the steamer for 5 minutes before removing.

Notes

  • Do not open the steamer lid immediately after cooking to prevent buns from collapsing.
  • You can substitute Nutella with other spreads like peanut butter or red bean paste.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat by steaming.
  • Sift matcha powder to avoid clumps in the dough.
