Description

These soft dinner rolls are buttery, fluffy, and perfect for any meal. Made from scratch with simple ingredients, they deliver a light, tender texture ideal for serving warm with butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) granulated sugar
  • 2 and 1/4 teaspoons (1 standard packet) active dry or instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour, plus more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: additional melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Whisk the warm milk, sugar, and yeast together in a large bowl. Cover and allow to sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the melted butter, egg, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the remaining flour 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. If dough is too sticky, add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3–5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into 15 equal pieces. Shape into balls and place in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  7. Cover and let the rolls rise for 1 hour until puffy.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes until golden brown on top.
  9. Remove from oven and brush with optional melted butter. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • You can make the dough a day ahead and let it rise in the refrigerator overnight.
  • These rolls freeze well for up to 3 months.
  • Ensure your milk isn’t too hot, or it may kill the yeast.
