Ingredients
- 1 and 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water (about 110°F/45°C)
- 1 packet active dry or instant yeast (2 and 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
- 2/3 cup (160g) baking soda
- 9 cups (2,160ml) water for boiling
Instructions
- Whisk warm water and yeast together in a large bowl. Let sit for 1 minute.
- Add salt and sugar, then slowly mix in the flour. Mix and knead the dough for 3–4 minutes until it is thick and slightly tacky.
- Shape into a ball, place in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rest in a warm environment for 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
- Cut dough into 6 sections. Roll each into a 20-inch rope and cut into 1.5-inch pieces.
- Boil water and baking soda. Drop 8–10 pretzel bites into boiling water for 20 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on baking sheets.
- Brush each with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
