Description
Soft, fluffy, and flavorful sourdough dinner rolls made with active sourdough starter. These rolls are perfect as a side dish or for making sliders.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (120g) active sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
- 3/4 cup (180ml) warm milk
- 2 Tbsp (28g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 Tbsp (12g) sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp butter, melted (for brushing after baking)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, melted butter, sugar, and egg. Mix until combined.
- Add the flour and salt to the mixture and stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 4–5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, divide it into 12 equal pieces, and shape each into a ball.
- Place the rolls into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise again for 1–2 hours until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown.
- Brush the warm rolls with melted butter and let them cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Ensure your sourdough starter is active and bubbly before use.
- For a deeper sour flavor, you can cold-proof the dough overnight in the refrigerator.
- Rolls can be frozen after baking and reheated later.
