Description
A rich and hearty homemade spaghetti meat sauce made with Italian sausage, ground beef, tomatoes, and herbs, slowly simmered for deep flavor. Perfect for serving over pasta for a comforting classic meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 large sweet onion (peeled and diced)
- 5 cloves garlic (peeled and minced)
- 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/3 cup fresh parsley (chopped)
- 12 ounces tomato paste
- 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
- 15 ounces diced fire roasted tomatoes
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
Instructions
- Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and ground beef, breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring often, until the meat is browned and no pink remains.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Drain off any excess fat from the pot.
- Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and chopped parsley.
- Add the tomato paste and stir well until evenly combined with the meat mixture.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, diced fire roasted tomatoes with their liquid, and the chicken broth. Stir until everything is well incorporated.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours for deeper flavor, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- If the sauce becomes too thick, add additional chicken broth 1/4 cup at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
- Serve the hot meat sauce over cooked pasta.
Notes
- Simmering longer develops a deeper, richer flavor.
- If the sauce thickens too much during cooking, add chicken broth gradually to loosen it.
- This sauce freezes well for up to 3 months in airtight containers.
- Serve over spaghetti, linguine, or your favorite pasta.
