Description

A rich and hearty homemade spaghetti meat sauce made with Italian sausage, ground beef, tomatoes, and herbs, slowly simmered for deep flavor. Perfect for serving over pasta for a comforting classic meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large sweet onion (peeled and diced)
  • 5 cloves garlic (peeled and minced)
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 12 ounces tomato paste
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces diced fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sausage and ground beef, breaking the meat apart with a wooden spoon. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring often, until the meat is browned and no pink remains.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Drain off any excess fat from the pot.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and chopped parsley.
  4. Add the tomato paste and stir well until evenly combined with the meat mixture.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, diced fire roasted tomatoes with their liquid, and the chicken broth. Stir until everything is well incorporated.
  6. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with a lid and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours for deeper flavor, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. If the sauce becomes too thick, add additional chicken broth 1/4 cup at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
  8. Serve the hot meat sauce over cooked pasta.

Notes

  • Simmering longer develops a deeper, richer flavor.
  • If the sauce thickens too much during cooking, add chicken broth gradually to loosen it.
  • This sauce freezes well for up to 3 months in airtight containers.
  • Serve over spaghetti, linguine, or your favorite pasta.
