Description

Crispy baked tofu coated in a sticky, sweet, and tangy orange sesame sauce. This gluten-free dish is flavorful, satisfying, and perfect for a plant-based meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 block firm tofu (drained and cubed)
  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour
  • 1/3 cup gluten-free soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup honey (or maple syrup)
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cut the drained tofu into 1-inch cubes.
  3. Wrap tofu cubes in paper towels and gently press to remove excess moisture.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, honey, tomato paste, orange juice, orange zest, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add tofu cubes to the marinade and toss gently. Let sit for 15 minutes (or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator for deeper flavor).
  6. Remove tofu from the marinade using tongs and place in a clean bowl. Reserve the marinade.
  7. Sprinkle tapioca flour over the tofu and toss gently until coated.
  8. Arrange tofu on a lined or lightly oiled baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, until golden and slightly crisp.
  9. Pour the reserved marinade into a saucepan and cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, until thick and sticky.
  10. Toss baked tofu in the sauce, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve.

Notes

  • For a vegan option, substitute honey with maple syrup.
  • Pressing tofu longer improves texture and crispiness.
  • Serve with rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a pan for best texture.
