Description

This homemade pizza sauce is rich, flavorful, and easy to make with pantry staples. It’s perfect for any style of pizza and delivers a robust tomato flavor with just the right balance of herbs and spices.


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add tomato paste and stir to combine, cooking for 1-2 minutes to reduce acidity.
  5. Pour in tomato sauce and stir well.
  6. Add sugar, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  7. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  8. Adjust seasoning to taste and use immediately or store for later.

Notes

  • Can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or frozen for up to 3 months.
