Description
This traditional German meatloaf, known as Hackbraten, is a flavorful and hearty dish made with ground beef, onions, breadcrumbs, and a blend of seasonings. It’s often served with potatoes and gravy, making it a comforting family favorite.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp mustard
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp oil (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with oil.
- In a small bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- Add the soaked breadcrumbs to the meat mixture and mix well until all ingredients are combined.
- Form the meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it in the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 60–70 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure doneness.
- You can add chopped parsley or grated cheese for extra flavor.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, gravy, or steamed vegetables.
