Description

This traditional German meatloaf, known as Hackbraten, is a flavorful and hearty dish made with ground beef, onions, breadcrumbs, and a blend of seasonings. It’s often served with potatoes and gravy, making it a comforting family favorite.


Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp oil (for greasing the baking dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with oil.
  2. In a small bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, eggs, mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  4. Add the soaked breadcrumbs to the meat mixture and mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  5. Form the meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake for 60–70 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  7. Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
