This Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole is a flavorful twist on the classic holiday side dish. It features double the amount of crispy fried onions for extra crunch and flavor, making it a standout at any gathering.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup chicken stock
- 2 (12-ounce) packages frozen French-style green beans, thawed
- 2 (6-ounce) cans French fried onions, divided
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook for 1 minute.
- Sprinkle in flour and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in milk and chicken stock. Continue to whisk until sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in green beans and 1 can of French fried onions. Mix well to combine.
- Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
- Top with remaining can of French fried onions and return to oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until onions are golden and crispy.
- Remove from oven and serve hot.
Notes
- Use fresh green beans if preferred; blanch them before using.
- Can be made ahead and refrigerated before final baking step.
- Add a pinch of cayenne for a spicy kick.
